Cloud Net offering back up VoIP package for businesses using BT

21 June 2010. Cloud Net has today announced a business phone package aimed to ensure that small businesses have working phone systems if a BT strike goes ahead. In the case of a strike, business owners whose lines develop a fault could be left with no telephone lines or broadband.

Cloud Net is offering a back up phone system which can be activated in case of a fault developing on a BT line.

Cloud Net is offering BT subscribers a special package at £47.50 per handset + VAT set up cost, including a free phone, and set up to any telephone number, a powerful internet based switchboard, and the ability to cancel the contract immediately with no termination fees. Cloud Net will only bill rental charges (£8.50 per month) and call costs from the date a BT user starts to use the system.

This means if BT strikes small companies will have a complete back up plan in a box waiting to go, preconfigured, for a low cost with no commitment.

Cloud Net can either transfer existing BT numbers to Cloud Net or can set up a divert from BT and when the strike is over, BT users can switch back to BT should they wish to.

David Hill, Chairman of Cloud Net explains, “Industry accepted estimates demonstrate that on average a customer experiences a serious fault every 18 months which means that the network will degrade at the rate of about 8% a month. That is after month one 92% will still function and 84% after two if no fixes are implemented. We believe that small businesses should be thinking of contingency plans to ensure that they have a back up phone system if the strike does take place. If they leave it too late, they made end up scrambling around for a phone system which is not reliant on BT.”

BT employees have until 5 July to decide whether they will go on strike for the first time in 23 years. The strike which can start as early as 12 July may have catastrophic results for BT users, whether consumers or businesses.

Unless a consumer or small business uses companies like Cloud Net, Virgin or Cable and Wireless, they could face being without phone or broadband during a strike.

Small businesses

BT provides phone services to many small businesses and most other providers use their lines for the final connections. Hardly any small businesses use Virgin and Cable and Wireless will only supply large companies so the total network for consumers and small businesses not using Virgin or Cable and Wireless could be affected.

No engineers will come out to fix broadband or phone lines in the case of a strike, so BT customers could be left without a service as long as the strike continues. The thought of no phone or internet is unthinkable for many households and could be the ruin of many businesses.

Can the internet break BT’s monopoly?

Unlike companies that resell BT services, the Cloud Net network is not reliant on BT engineers to fix it. Their network is based on Voice over IP which uses the internet to make phone calls.

As long as there is a broadband connection, Cloud Net phones still work. If one connection goes down, then users can take their phones and plug them into an alternative broadband line, for example an additional line in their office. Alternatively users can take the phones home and plug it into their home broadband service and work there for the day. This means that users will still have use of their usual office phone numbers and all the switchboard features they are used to, including the ability to transfer calls within the business.”

BT pensions in the balance could further anger unions

July 12 is a critical day for BT. BT will have its day in court over the government’s position with regard to BT’s pension fund. Which ever way the judgement goes it will inflame the union’s attitude

In addition, BT’s discussions with contractors such as Carillion to take over engineering work and BT’s intended use of middle management to carry out repairs will hardly pacify the union.

Cloud Net

David Hill, Chairman of Cloud Net says that his company can offer a robust alternative to BT so that companies can avoid being reliant on the telecoms giant and its thousands of unhappy workers.

Cloud Net can provide a greater degree of resilience than telecoms giants as its telephone systems are based on the internet.

If users want to benefit from Cloud Net, then there is no guarantee that BT will allow the porting of numbers away during the strike – so now is the time to act.

Cloud Net will still be able to configure systems in the period of a strike but may not be able to transfer numbers – so new users would have to use new telephone numbers which would not be ideal.

There are other options from Cloud Net as well to help small businesses survive the BT strike. Cloud Net will divert any call to any phone, anywhere with no divert fee and also provides a live answering service to field any incoming calls.

“The great thing is that you can keep all of this flexibility and resilience comes at very little cost. If you want a standby power supply in case the mains cuts out, it costs a fortune. If you want a standby phone system in case of strikes, there is no capital cost from Cloud Net and a very low monthly subscription,” says Charles Chance, MD of Cloud Net.

LONDON, May 20 /PRNewswire/ — Mobile VoIP is no longer just hype, but has become a credible threat to traditional voice revenues. Considering that it is only a matter of time until Internet protocol (IP) becomes the principal transport for various access technologies, an ambitious group of mobile VoIP start-up companies are creating a paradigm shift in the way users communicate with each other, with voice services moving to a true Internet era of Telco 2.0.

(Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20081117/FSLOGO)

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.wireless.frost.com), Impact of Mobile VoIP on Next Generation Cellular Networks, finds that that at the end of 2008, approximately $605.8 million of mobile VoIP revenues were generated in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Latin America. This is expected to grow to $29.57 billion by 2015. The technologies covered in this research service are high-speed packet access (HSPA), third-generation long-term evolution (3G LTE), global system of mobile communications (GSM), IP multimedia subsystem (IMS), HSPA+, general packet radio service (GPRS), voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and session initiation protocol (SIP).

“The emergence of flat rate mobile data pricing, positive growth of smartphone shipments, and high-speed mobile broadband availability has spurred the adoption rate of mobile VoIP,” says Frost & Sullivan Senior Industry Analyst Saverio Romeo. “Mobile operators realise they can no longer ignore the fact that mobile will be a key component of integrated IP-based communications and next generation wireless technologies such as HSPA+ and LTE.”

Significant traction in the application space, primarily driven by the success of the iPhone, has resulted in several smartphone vendors making provisions in their applications stores for users to download and use third-party VoIP clients over both wireless fidelity (WiFi) and cellular broadband networks.

However, many cellular operators have prohibited the use of mobile VoIP over their cellular networks, with some imposing a surcharge to avoid cannibalisation of their circuit-switched voice revenue streams. Moreover, cellular operators face intense competition from the more popular Web-based VoIP alternatives that are permeating the mass market.

“Despite user demand for cost-effective services, some mobile operators will continue to discourage mobile subscribers from using VoIP over cellular networks and suggest that it will not provide the same quality, efficiency and reliability of services offered by the GSM network,” explains Romeo. “Recent surveys indicate that nearly 60 to 70 per cent of the major European mobile operators prohibit or restrict the usage of VoIP over their popular mobile broadband data plans.”

Mobile operators should eventually do away with imposing bans or surcharges to their mobile broadband packages to support mobile VoIP, as the client devices supporting HSPA+ and LTE will be based on open platforms and support SIP for third-party applications.

“When the operators migrate to an all-IP IMS network, they should drive innovative services such as multimedia telephony, high definition voice, integrating voice with context-based information about the user, and the device from a converged presence-enabled address book,” concludes Romeo. “This will enable them to differentiate their services from mobile VoIP start-ups.”

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – Appia Communications reported today that compressed time frames and tight budgets have encouraged more companies and organizations to consider hosted VoIP and other remotely-managed services to replace onsite equipment.

Appia, a leading provider of managed communication and network services, said it is experiencing a surge in projects that have been squeezed for time and money by the still-recovering economy.

“The down economy put a lot of projects on hold, but many companies can no longer afford to wait,” said Jason Ulm, Appia’s vice president of sales. “Some have had to move offices on short notice. For others, old equipment got older and started to fail. At the same time, equipment manufacturers are still ramping up operations, resulting in product shortages, supply chain issues and much longer lead times. When your phone system suddenly dies, ‘backorder’ is not a word you want to hear.”

Ulm said that the speed and flexibility of hosted deployments have always been strengths, but they’ve taken on new importance in the current environment. He pointed to some current Appia customers as examples.

“In one case, we helped a retail operation cut capital expenditures by over $200,000 and move into a new store three full weeks sooner than with a traditional build-out,” Ulm said. “In another, when a voicemail system crashed, we installed a new hosted system and VoIP service for 120 phones before the old equipment vendor could even provide a quote. Hosted deployments are far and away the fastest out there.”

(The Hosting News) – VISI will celebrate the grand opening of its newest data center with an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, May 21, 2010 from noon to 6 p.m. at VISI’s Eden Prairie headquarters. The event is open to the Twin Cities business community and will feature product demonstrations, data center tours, food, drinks, prizes and educational sessions on cloud computing and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies.

The VISI data center is being built to Tier III specifications and will feature 18,000 square feet of raised floor when completely built out, which will make this one of the largest data centers in the state. The Eden Prairie data center will significantly expand the ability to meet the demand generated from VISI’s colocation, managed hosting, and cloud computing services.

“Demand for colocation space in the Twin Cities remained strong during the economic downturn and continues to outpace supply,” said Mike Sowada, CEO of VISI. “The additional space provided by our Eden Prairie facility will allow more Midwest companies to expand and benefit from colocating their mission critical equipment in a world-class data center.”

Eden Prairie Mayor Phil Young, accompanied by members of the Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce, will cut the ribbon for the new data center at noon on May 21. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the inner-workings of the Tier III data center during guided tours.

Two months ago, VISI joined forces with Telephone and Data Systems Inc. (TDS), a Fortune 500® company based in Chicago. TDS subsidiary, TDS Telecommunications Corp. will be demonstrating its managedIP solution during the open house for those interested in the latest VoIP technologies.

Individuals and businesses interested in attending the free event can RSVP atwww.visi.com/OpenHouse.

Helena Community Credit Union (HCCU) was established in Helena in 1936 as “Helena U.S. Employees Federal Credit Union.” Since that time, the name has changed to Helena Community Credit Union — allowing a larger field of membership. Helena Community offers its members the latest in technology as well as a full menu of products — from all types of loans (including mortgage) to 24 hour account information by phone or internet, bill paying, checking, various savings accounts for all ages, as well as IRA’s, Share Certificates and VISA.

With a commitment to offering its members the best possible customer service utilizing the latest technology, Helena Community Credit Union sought out what the market perceived to be the best and most expensive VoIP phone system. However, after three tedious months of installation issues, Helena found itself with an expensive solution that still didn’t meet their most basic of needs such as simultaneous ringing at multiple branch locations. Frustrated and with no end in sight, Helena turned to AltiGen Communications to implement a full unified communications solution which was up and running in 2 days over the same weekend it was purchased.

“It just worked,” said Greg Strizich, President of HCCU. “Not only was AltiGen able to install the entire system over the course of a weekend, the features met and exceeded everything we needed. In addition to the system reliability, we experience seamless integration with Outlook, superior call center tools with incredible user interfaces, simple centralized management and a unified company presence across all branch locations.”

“Now with 400 bank and credit union customers, AltiGen has perfected its offering to the financial sector,” stated AltiGen Vice President of Sales, Mike Plumer. “As a software-based solution, with a low hardware footprint, we are able to quickly and efficiently setup complete systems in a very short period of time. We are proud to have Helena Community Credit Union as part of our ever-growing financial services customer base.”

The first widespread deployments of the Atlanta™ based WiMax Fixed Wireless Terminals (FWT) will be in Asia and Europe where rollouts are expected to begin during the third quarter of 2010. Deployments follow several months of rigorous field testing of equipment under varying network conditions to ensure interoperability, quality and performance.

The adoption of WiMAX, a fourth generation wireless technology, is rapidly gaining momentum worldwide. According to a recent ABI Research report, 164 mobile WiMAX networks were in trial or commercial operation at the end of 2009, and the number of WiMAX subscribers is expected to grow from approximately 6 million in 2009 to over 30 million by 2011.

“We are delighted to have been selected by our major customer as the vendor of choice for their WiMAX VoIP terminal deployments. The fast growing VoIP market presents strategic growth opportunities for TranSwitch,” said Dr. M. Ali Khatibzadeh, President and CEO of TranSwitch. “Our Atlanta™ and Entropia™ product families offer best-in-class performance in terms of voice quality, power consumption and packet processing in the industry,” concluded Dr. Khatibzadeh.

TranSwitch’s Atlanta™ 80 is well positioned for network deployments worldwide. Last year, Korea’s fastest growing broadband operator, SK Broadband, deployed over a million DECT VoIP terminals based on the Atlanta™ processor. Other service providers are also conducting trials of Atlanta™ 80 based equipment for their networks.

“Atlanta™’s dedicated and optimized VoIP DSPbased technology enables WiMAX terminals to provide consistently high voice quality even under high internet data traffic conditions,” said Mr. Kris Shankar, VP of Sales and Marketing at TranSwitch. “The selection of Atlanta™ in these deployments is a testament to TranSwitch’s leadership in VoIP technology.” Mr. Shankar continued, “With an integrated Digital Signal Processor (DSP) optimized for VoIP, the Atlanta™ 80 product can simultaneously support 100 Mbps wire-speed routing with Network Address Translation (NAT), Security, WiFi, T38 Fax and up to eight voice channels while maintaining excellent voice quality. We are uniquely architected to deliver all these features with little to no impact on overall performance.”

ManageEngine, makers of a globally renowned suite of cost effective network, systems, applications and security management software solutions, today announced NetFlow Analyzer 8, the latest version of the company’s web-based traffic analysis and network forensics application, used by almost 4,000 enterprises worldwide.

Among the enhancements found in the new NetFlow Analyzer is the ability to monitor Voice over IP (VoIP) using IPSLA. The addition of this feature allows administrators to monitor critical VoIP performance metrics, such as Jitter, Latency and Packet Loss. With VoIP monitoring integrated into NetFlow Analyzer, administrators can now monitor the performance of their VoIP networks with the same management application used to monitor their overall enterprise network bandwidth, eliminating the need for multiple tools.

Support for SNMP v3 is another critical enhancement found in NetFlow Analyzer 8. SNMPv3 provides secure access to devices by a combination of authentication and encryption of packets over the network. NetFlow Analyzer 8 also adds the ability to examine Network Based Application Recognition (NBAR) traffic generated by Flexible NetFlow (FNF), allowing administrators to analyze NBAR using either FNF or SNMP, in the absence of Cisco devices exporting FNF in their network. Additionally, with Cisco ASA NetFlow reporting in this version, administrators can see post-NAT IP addresses, making it possible to identify the actual LAN users who were the source and destination of traffic beyond the firewall.

Using the new NetFlow Analyzer, administrators may organize their infrastructure in a way that makes performance monitoring much simpler. The IP addresses of social, mail, sports and video sites, for example, may be grouped with like sites under the appropriate category. Network administrators may then very easily view traffic to these groups. Administrators can continue creating IP groups as needed and add individual IP addresses to those groups.

With the new version of NetFlow Analyzer, ManageEngine also introduces geo-location of IP addresses, automatically organizing addresses by country. Once NetFlow Analyzer has organized by host geography, the application then provides details on the top 10 addresses contributing to network traffic from each country, along with the actual amount of data and the utilization of the link.

In addition to the new capabilities described above, a number of existing capabilities were enhanced, including the ability for administrators to add child policies under parent policies in Cisco CBQoS, facilitating a finer reporting of CBQoS policies in the network; simplified report scheduling with a single mouse click; and easier to understand widgets for the customizable dashboard as newer graphical representations are introduced.

“The new capabilities developed for NetFlow Analyzer 8 combined with existing monitoring capabilities based on various Cisco’s technologies ensure network administrators get the most benefit from the Cisco devices in their network,” said Vijayarangakannan Rajkumar, product manager, ManageEngine. “We strongly believe in user-oriented solution development – the introduction of highly useful features such as IPSLA monitoring, SNMP v3 support, FNF NBAR analysis, along with enhancements to existing features is a testament to that.”

“With NetFlow Analyzer we can easily understand network traffic patterns and recognize whether we are prone to performance degradation or security threats,” said Matt Goli, Network Engineer, American Foods Group. “The fact that ManageEngine is continuing to add features to NetFlow Analyzer makes the application that much more valuable. I recommend it without hesitation.”
